LEN President Paolo Barelli has signed the hosting agreement on the 2020 European Championships in Budapest (HUN) on Thursday with the Minister for National Development Miklos Sesztak, Hungarian Swimming Association President Tamas Gyarfas and Hungarian Water Polo Federation President Denes Kemeny.
For the first time each event will take place in the same city (country): the Hungarian capital will host the LEN European Aquatics Championships on 4-17 May 2020 (featuring swimming, diving and synchronised swimming), the European Water Polo Championships on 12-26 January 2020 and the European Open Water Swimming Championships on 16-21 June 2020 in Balatonfured. The Masters meets – except for water polo – will also take place in Budapest (late May) and at lake Balaton (20-21 June). If all stakeholders agree, the first ever European High Diving Championships might also be staged on 19-20 August 2020.
“Both the European Aquatics Championships and the European Water Polo Championships have been growing bigger in bigger in all fields” LEN President Paolo Barelli said after the signing ceremony, held in the Ministry of National Development. “In terms of participation, promotion, public attendance and definitely the TV viewing figures and the significant jump in the reach on the web made our events the highlights of the international sport calendar.”
Hungary has been busy with hosting major international events since 2005, but after three editions of aquatic Europeans the 2020 meet will be the first to be staged in the brand new aquatic complex, being constructed for the 2017 FINA World Championships.
“We are glad that these prestigious events will be hosted by Hungary in particular” the LEN President added. “We stage the Water Polo Champions’ League Final Six tournament in Budapest next May in the new complex, so we really count on this great city with realising the various grand aquatics events.”
