Just the weekend left before the 11th women's world junior championships kick off in Volos, Greece. The Greek federation and local organisers came to the rescue after Mexican city Merida withdrew just over a month before the start of the championships due to a lack of financial support from the government. After a quick set up by the experienced organisers the 20 & under aged women's national teams will fly in today and tomorrow. Although USA is the defending champion, in a more interested fact the American squad also is reigning world youth (18 & under) champion after beating Canada 5-4 in the gold medal final in Madrid, Spain last year. Hungary topped Greece on penalties for the bronze medal during that tournament with a lot of these players expected to take major roles in Volos next week coming in one more year experienced an d grown.
This year's world junior championships for men and women will be played with test rules, imposed by FINA to test a possible change to the game after the 2016 Olympic Games, with the most important change for the women being that each team shall consist of a maximum of 11 players: 9 field players and 2 goalkeepers. Starting line-ups will consist of 6 players including 1 goalkeeper per team.
