Thanks to a converted penalty shot by lefty Isobel Bishop with just a minute remaining Australia defeated Italt 8-7 in a tight battle for first place in group A of the women's World League Super Final preliminary phase Thursday. The Aussie Stingers, missing centre-back Hannah Buckling, sidelined with a broken finger, saw captain Bronwen Knox fouling out before three quarters were played still managed to hold on for the important win. Youngster Bronte Halligan earned a penalty with just 64 seconds on the clock followed by the game winner from Bishop. Australia now meets Brazil in the crossover round Friday for a spot in the semifinals. Italy, with Arianna Garibotti as top scorer with 3 goals in Thursday's match-up, take on the Netherlands in the opening match on Friday. The Dutch could not cause an upset against USA who controlled their match-up throughout and triumphed 3-8 to win group B. In other results, Canada benefited by claiming 2nd place in group B as they defeated Brazil 11-8 on Thursday. In the final match in Shanghai, hosts China made the home crowd cheer by holding off Russia 9-7. Canada now meets home team China for a top 4 berth while Russia has the daunting task of facing group winners and defending champions USA in the crossovers Friday.
