The calm before the storm has not yet passed as Eger, Szolnok, and OSC all noted down comfortable victories in round 21 this weekend. Eger started on Friday afternoon with their match against DVSE in Debrecen. The hosts started very well and were able to keep equal tread with the defending league champions. Debrecen was even leading for the entire first period until youngster Gergő Zalánki made it 4-4 on Eger’s last attack of that period.
In the second period Eger loosened up and shots started flying passed DVSE goalie Dusan Aleksic. By half-time the score had climbed to 6-11 and the visitors were controlling the game. After the break goals kept coming from both sides. The scoring frenzy eventually led to an entertaining 10-20 end score. Top scorer at DVSE was Márk Kállay with 5 goals, followed by Eger’s Péter Biros, Balázs Hárai, Norbert Hosnyánszky, and Uros Cuckovic with 3 goals each.
Following Saturday morning OSC took on PVSK in Budapest. It was always going to be a high scoring game for OSC against the number 13 of the league. By half-time the score was 10-2 and the visitors had nothing to put up against OSC’s offensive power. The final 18-7 score could even have ended up much higher as OSC hit only 9 of their 25 action shots and only 5 of their 9 power plays. League top goal scored Bence Bátori added another 3 to his count.
In the second of 3 consecutive home games, Szolnok displayed yet again why there are title favorites and a side to fear in Europe as well. Number 5 Honvéd, who are battling with FTC for the 4th play-off spot, were degraded to sidekick level by the league leaders. Hungarian national team goalie Viktor Nagy was on fire, stopping 14 of the 15 shots fired at his goal. Only Japanese star Koji Takei managed to get one passed the standout goalie. With the focus on defence, Szolnok were less impressive in offence but still reached double figures to send Honvéd home with a 10 goal difference.
With their loss in Szolnok, Honvéd is slowly losing sight of FTC for that 4th and final play-off spot. FTC added 3 points to their total with a victory in Kaposvár and is now 6 points ahead of their rivals with only 5 rounds remaining.
However, Honvéd still have a game in hand and FTC is yet to face Eger and Szolnok in round 23 and round 25 respectively. Because Honvéd are not meeting any of the top 3 anymore in the remaining games, they could potentially overtake FTC again in the coming weeks provided they win all their games. Round 26 will then be the climax of this battle as the teams will go head to head to decide who will join Szolnok, OSC, and Eger in the play offs this year.
