Szolnok and Eger both put on strong displays coming from the midweek Champions League games. Eger stepped up at home against Olympiacos to climb to 2nd place in their group, only just behind Pro Recco, and now hold a firm grasp on their campaign to qualify for the Final 6 tournament for the first time in the club history. The empowering victory over the Greek champions also motivated the team of coach Norbert Dabrowski to take care of some early season demons. At the beginning of the season in round 2 UVSE shocked the competition by keeping Eger to a draw and stealing valuable points from the defending champion. However this time Eger was not to be caught off guard. After a 5-0 first part UVSE tried to fight back and managed to contain the score to 2-2 in the second quarter for a 7-2 half-time score. However after the break Eger turned on the style again to put UVSE back in their place and revenge themselves for the poor result in round 2. Thanks to 3 goals of Balázs Hárai and 9 other goal scorers at Eger’s side, the final result climbed up to 17-5.

Szolnok had a little less successful week suffering (only) their 2nd official loss of the season in Croatia at Jug Dubrovnik. Despite the defeat they still hold Final 6 qualification in their own hands, but for the first time the team showed some weaknesses. The round 15 game away at Vasas proved a perfect opportunity to recover from the defeat and restore the unbeatable aura surrounding the team. Without Dénes Varga, who was rested, Szolnok had no problem with Vasas who only scored once in the first 3 parts of the game. With a 12-1 score the visitors took their foot off the gas and allowed Vasas to have some fun in the final period. With 4 goals each the final score noted 16-5.
Coming Tuesday in round 16 the big clash of Hungary has been scheduled to be broadcasted live on DigiSport. If Eger has any ambition to finish the competition at the top of the league, this game is a must win. A victory for Szolnok pretty much means they will start the playoffs from the number 1 spot. It anyway seems that both teams are ready for it!
The third title contender OSC did not play this weekend. Their round 15 match against BVSC is scheduled for February 12th.
“The best of the rest” Honvéd and FTC did not make any mistakes either. For the first time with Serbian winter transfer Marko Avramovic in the squad, FTC had no problems in Debrecen against DVSC. Even Olympic champion Tamás Varga could not save his team from the defeat this time. FTC rivals Honvéd had more difficulties than expected in Szentes against the number 14 of the league. Some controversial decision by the referees led the match to almost spin out of control. It looked done and dusted in the 1st period already after Márton Nagy was excluded without substitution and Honvéd worked towards a 9-4 lead ahead of half-time. However in the 3rd part Honvéd suddenly lost their heads. Less than 5 minutes later Szentes had turned the momentum in their favor and László Weszelovszky took his team within 1 goal difference after a penalty given to Szentes for a Márton Lévai foul. Honvéd assistant coach István Gergely received a red card for protesting the official’s decision. With only the 4th period remaining and an 8-9 score, both teams had everything to play for. Weren’t it had been for yet another referee decision that killed the game. Viktor Vörös got excluded without substitution and Honvéd could wrap the game up for a hard fought victory.
Coming Wednesday the battle for place 4 will continue when FTC goes to OSC and Honvéd visits Vasas.
