Day 5 of the Champions League prelims got underway on Wednesday in Piraeus, Greece where reigning European champions Barceloneta gained their first win of this campaign but a rather usefull one in the tight group A as the Spaniards topped Olympiacos 7-9. A superior first half orchestrated the big victory when in especially the second quarter Barceloneta gained control of the match leading 1-5 at half-time. That marging proved enough to overcome a late Olympiacos surge in the final period as Albert Español's 3 goals fueled Barceloneta to the win as they now only take 5th place, due to Radnicki's surprise win over Eger at home, but jumped over Olympiacos, who suffered their 2nd straight loss, in the standings. Radnicki shaked things up in group A by a striking win over Hungarian champions ZF-Eger in Wednesday's 2nd match of the day. The home team used a furious 3rd-quarter rally to make a strong push for the win but had to give it their best in the game's final phase as Eger came back to as close as a single-goal deficit but Marton Szivos' 2nd goal, with just 9 seconds remaining, came too late to force a draw for Eger. The Hungarians dropped valuable points while Radnicki is right back in the picture thanks to the hard-fought triumph. Pro Recco stayed undefeated in round 5 as they took revanche for the close 7-6 loss in the Italian league to rivals Brescia on Wednesday beating Brescia 8-5 in a solid performance. The home team used the second quarter to gain a definite advantage and controlled the match throughout despite Brescia hanging on at two and three-goal deficits. With the win Recco, confirming their title favourite status, are close to ensuring qualification for the Final Six, already at the half-way point.
Meanwhile in group B Primorje joine the favourites in the rankings as they, for the second time in a one week, defeating domestic rivals Jug Dubrovnik. After 12-9 win in the Regional league 16th round last Saturday in Dubrovnik, on Wednesday at home Primorje proved once again to be the upper side this time cruising to a solid 10-5 victory. The home side established control in the first half and was not endangered in the remainder of the contest as they now join Jug with 12 points out of 5 games. The shift in group B was made even more clear as day 5 progressed after Spandau topped Partizan at home in Berlin 8-6 for their first victory of the campaign. In a solid performance after the opening quarter the German record champions got up ahead and managed to control the game until the end. Serbian Mateo Cuk led the home side scoring 4 goals. Elsewhere in Szolnok Galatasaray played along quite nicely in the first half even grabbing a slim lead on several ocassions before half-time. A furiuous 3rd quarter by the home team however changed everything as Szolnok took over the game and decided things right away. Shooter Stefan Mitrovic led the charge netting 5 shots while fellow countrymen Zivko Gocic (3) and Milan Aleksic (2) added up as well. At the half-way points the situation in group B seems to be quite clear and perhaps even decided with regards to the battle for the top 3 spots that ensure qualification for the Final Six tournament.
