After the midweek Champions League game against Szolnok (11-11), OSC had the other title rival coming to visit. Eger had a bit of a false start to the season with 2 wins, 1 draw, and 1 defeat and especially the draw against UVSE might proof critical in a few months’ time. However, a good result against the unbeaten team of OSC would push the defending champion right back on course. On top of the regular tension when 2 top competitors meet, there is of course the matter of 6 ex-Eger players on OSC side which will bring extra sentiment every time these teams cross swords.
A must-win game for Eger to avoid going 7 points behind the competition.
Still without captain Péter Biros and centre-forward Balázs Hárai, Eger got under pressure early in the game. However, Serbian goalkeeper Branislav Mitrovic showed form by saving all OSC shots fired at his goal. On the first exclusion at the other end OSC paid the price for their inaccurate shooting. Eger directly cashed in with Norbert Hosnyánszky scoring the first and only goal of the first period.
Joseph Kayes finally got the better of Mitrovic halfway in the 2nd period. The big Kiwi returned from injury against Szolnok midweek and immediately showed his worth hitting 4 goals. The 1-1 was the signal for OSC to turn on the style and Miklós Gór-Nagy put the home team in front after which Gábor Kovács doubled the lead going into half-time.
With the consequences of a defeat in mind Eger came out strong after the break. Márton Szivós (pictured with Balázs Erdélyi) almost single handedly levelled the score again with 2 goals to maintain perspective for Eger. Tension was increasing as the clock was running out for the 3rd period. The teams both scored a goal each to go into the final period with a 4-4 score.
Eger appeared surprisingly fresh with the limited rotation of bench players and after a 3-goal streak, including goals of Boris Vapenski, Milos Cuk, and Márton Szivós the visitors were suddenly leading 4-7 with under 3 minutes to go. OSC did hit one back by Bence Bátori, but when Milos Cuk’s deflected shot restored the lead to 3, the game was over.
“We tried to slow down the pace of OSC as they had a better start to the game. Our focus was the defense and we did notice OSC had a tough game against Szolnok not long ago. However, we trained very hard this week also preparing for this game. The season is still long and the table is not important yet. However, this was a critical match with more than just points at stake. The team deserved the win.” Norbert Dabrowski (Eger Head coach) – source: Digisport.hu
“We knew this was going to be a tough game so fast after the Szolnok match this past Wednesday. However, in the first half we played well. The defense was stable but we were not sharp enough in offense. We can definitely improve. The match against Szolnok was more important for us, but we always want to win of course. Eger is a good team with strong players and they analyzed our play very well. Tuesday we meet Szeged and it is a must win game.” Balázs Vincze (OSC Head coach) – source: Digisport.hu
“We really wanted to win this game and started okay but OSC are a good team and were much sharper at the beginning. This was a wakeup call for us in the game and going forward all our players were able to give something extra. That was eventually the key to the victory. We have been missing players because of injury and suspension, which has a big impact also today. Every win is important but against such a strong opponent, it is an extra boost. Everyone is talking about OSC and Szolnok being new teams, but Eger is a new team also and even we need time to get to our best. Hopefully we can reach this soon and with the return of our injured team mates, also play our part in the Champions League.” Márton Szivós (man of the match – Eger) – source: Digisport.hu
The victory helps Eger to regain some terrain that was lost in earlier rounds. OSC are still in the top of the table but have to let go of Szolnok that grabbed their 5th consecutive win away at Kaposvár.
The league leaders did show some signs of weakness during the match-up and had much more trouble dealing with Kaposvár than expected beforehand. Until deep in the final period, the home side was even leading the match. Not until the last minute there was Stefan Mitrovic who saved the points for Szolnok by making it 7-8.
The trend so far this season is that a lot of matches are won, or lost, by a minimal difference.
This round we saw DVSE topping UVSE 8-7, Honvéd winning at PVSK by 11-12, and FTC continuing their great run at home against Szeged with a 10-9 victory. This promises a very exciting battle around the final top 4 spot as there are barely any certainties. Even the 3 top teams, Szolnok, Eger, and OSC, cannot afford to lose focus.
Coming Tuesday OSC will travel to Szeged for the televised round 6 match. The rest of the teams will follow on Wednesday as Szolnok welcome UVSE, Eger hosts Szentes, DVSE travels to Komjádi for a match with Vasas, Honvéd take on Kaposvár, PVSK visit BVSC, and KSI take on fellow Budapest based FTC.
