Red Star vs. Mornar
Serbian champions Red Star were off to a good start of their campaign in Regional league after victory in Belgrade against Mornar Brodospas 9-7 (2-1, 2-2, 1-3, 4-1). Skipping first round due to the VK Opatija withdrawal from the league, the team from Belgrade welcomed Mornar in front of a solid crowd of over 500 visitors at the Vlaho Orlic pool. As expected the brothers Rasovic, Strahinja and Viktor, took the main roles in a new looking Red Star squad after the leaving of big names during the summer. Still, coach Dejan Savic side manage to keep good rhythm in defence, thanks to agile and versatile players on the back with Serbian national player Sava Randjelovic and newcomers Dimitrije Obradovic and Radomir Drasovic. Strahinja Rasovic opened the score from an extra player situation but the visitors from Split responded quickly trough Jerko Marinic Kragic who was on form netting three during first half.
Mornar stayed close on half time (4-3), and after a somewhat longer brake due to technical difficulties with the scoreboard the team from Split finally managed to convert the extra man opportunities earned trough Jure Marelja’s strong play on the two meters line. Ivan Domagoj Zovic, Rino Buric and Maroje Gluhaic were on target to give their team first lead of the game 5-6 at the end of thid quarter. The home team came into the last quarter with a goal short but with fierce back-up of the home crowd Viktor Rasovic managed to level things at the beginning of the last period, before the vistors’ captain Marin Ban brought back the lead to his team.
In a tight finish the Mornar missed a couple extra man chances and Strahinja Rasovic took the leading role scoring from distance for the 7 all score. The game could go either way from there but the home team had more focus and managed to outplay their rivals with a good team effort with Nikola Eskert scoring an important goal with just over a minute to play for the lead: 8-7. Mornar tried to respond quickly, but fell short as Strahinja Rasovic scored his 5th of the game on a counter attack to seal the win.
The new round is to be played in seven days. Red Star is visiting Jadran in Herceg Novi while after two defeats to start Mornar will have a chance for victory when Primorac Kotor comes to the Poljud Pool in Split.
