It is finally here. The former Adriatic league will get its desired addition from the best Serbian teams to form an impressive but needed new regional league that should boost Balkan water polo that has enjoyed so much (international) sportive success but lacks the commercial benefits that are supposed to come along with it. The newly founded Triglav Regional Water Polo League will commence on 4 October and consist of 16 teams from Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia and a single contender from Slovenia. A meeting between all representatives in Zagreb on Friday confirmed the competition set-up and start of the league in one month time. Two groups of 8 teams will play a 14-round home-and-away competition before the top 4 of each group come together for the second phase of the league in which the points and goal differences of the matches against the teams from their own group are being held so just match-ups with teams coming in from the other group remain to complete the regular season. Then the four best ranked sides will battle for the championsip in a Final Four tournament on 3 and 4 April, 2015 to be hosted by the regular season winner. And with weekly national tv broadcasts the needed exposure looks to be making a step forward, even in the region that features more tv coverage of water polo than most other countries in the world. A detailed schedule is to be announced later but with most organising rules and the draw of the groups confirmed on Friday, the involved clubs can prepare for an exciting season of (inter)national water polo in a league that is expected to among the best the game has to offer at present.
The bottom 2 sides of the league this season will relegate from the top division as the league will be devided in two groups from the 2015/2016 season onwards with this season's top 10 teams being placed in the division 1 while the other clubs play in the 2nd division.
