The first day of the men's water polo tournament at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea featured no surprises. Favorites, Japan, Singapore and defending champions Kazakhstan all won their opening matches. Japan had the most difficult task in overcoming China but did so thanks to a good first and fourth quarter performance to win by three. Singapore kicked off their campaign in easy fashion running past Hong Kong who were held scoreless in the second and fourth period with a 13-4 final score as result. Finally Kazakhstan showed their dominance in the field by dominating hosts South Korea already leading the match 10-2 at half time.
